Boat crews can consist of different numbers of rowers. The design of the boats and the type of oars used in them depend on the type of race. For example, rowing uses oars in oarlocks, kayaking uses double-bladed paddles that paddlers hold in their hands, and canoeing uses single-bladed paddles.
