Doping Scandal in Russia
Russia became embroiled in an international doping scandal in 2013 after the London Olympics. In June 2015, the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA published a report according to which Russia ranked second after Turkey in violations of anti-doping rules. At that time, 7 athletes were stripped of their medals.
A new wave of the doping scandal swept through in 2019. The Compliance Review Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recommended that the organization's Executive Committee ban Russian athletes from international competitions for 4 years. WADA also believes that Russia tried to conceal the systematic use of doping by Russian athletes.
The final decision on the proposed penalties is expected on December 9, when a meeting of the WADA board will be held in Paris. Any WADA decision can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
